ChatGPT Ads Have Launched in the UK: Here’s What That Actually Means For Your Business

If you’ve seen the headlines about ChatGPT advertising landing in the UK, you’d be forgiven for thinking you can go and set up a campaign this week. You can’t, not yet, and understanding that gap is more useful than the headline itself.

What’s Actually Happened

OpenAI officially launched ChatGPT ads in the UK on 6 June 2026, confirmed by their VP of Monetisation on LinkedIn. That makes the UK OpenAI’s first European advertising market, following earlier launches in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Sponsored placements are already showing up for UK users on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans. If you’re on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Education, you won’t see them, OpenAI has kept those tiers ad free for now. The format itself is straightforward, a small sponsored card appears below the AI’s response, clearly separated from the answer itself, with a short headline, description and image.

Why You Probably Can’t Advertise Yet

This is the bit most coverage glosses over. Ads being visible to UK users is not the same as UK businesses being able to buy them.

Right now, access runs through a direct relationship with OpenAI’s own team rather than a self-serve platform. You can register interest, but there’s no open sign-up yet. The early UK partners named so far are Zalando and the agency group Dentsu, which gives you a sense of the scale OpenAI is working with while the pilot beds in.

In the US, this same pattern played out. Ads launched in February with a strict minimum spend, then gradually opened up over several months until a self-serve platform launched in May with no minimum at all. If the UK follows a similar timeline, self-serve access could open sometime in the autumn.

What’s Different About the UK Launch

One detail worth knowing if data protection matters to you, and it should. OpenAI updated its EU advertising policy just before the UK launch, requiring explicit opt-in consent from users before ads can be personalised, rather than relying on the broader “legitimate interest” basis some platforms use. That’s a stricter standard than the US approach, and it means UK ChatGPT ads may end up less precisely targeted, at least to begin with.

What’s Worth Doing Now, Even Before You Can Advertise

You don’t need to wait for self-serve access to start preparing. The most useful thing you can do today costs nothing, open ChatGPT and ask it about your business, and about your competitors. See what it says, whether it mentions you at all, and whether what it says is accurate.

This matters more than it might seem. Early findings from the US pilot suggest businesses that already appear organically in ChatGPT’s answers see their paid placements perform better once they do advertise, the ad reinforces something the user has already encountered rather than interrupting them. If you’re invisible to ChatGPT today, that’s genuinely useful information, and it’s the same groundwork that improves your visibility in AI search generally, not just inside a future ad campaign.

So, Should You Do Anything Right Now?

For most Shropshire businesses, the honest answer is: not with ad spend, not yet. Registering interest with OpenAI costs nothing and puts you in the queue for whenever wider access opens. Beyond that, the better use of your time is making sure your website and content are structured in a way ChatGPT and other AI tools can actually find, understand and trust, since that groundwork pays off whether or not you ever run a ChatGPT ad.

If you want a clear read on where your business currently stands in AI search, and what’s worth doing before this channel opens up properly, that’s exactly the kind of thing worth talking through.
