You don’t need to hire anyone to make a start on AI search visibility. A handful of practical changes to how your website is written and structured can make a real difference to whether AI tools can find, understand and confidently cite your business. Here are five worth tackling first.
1. Answer the Question in the First Few Lines
AI tools that pull information in real time, including Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews, weigh a page’s opening content heavily. If your page builds up to the answer over several paragraphs, an AI system may never get there.
Start each key page, and each blog post, with a direct answer to the question the page is meant to address. Save the detail, the context and the supporting explanation for after. If someone asks “how much does SEO cost in Shropshire,” your page should answer that in the first sentence or two, not the fifth paragraph.
2. Break Content Into Clear, Extractable Sections
AI systems don’t read a page the way a person does. They parse it, looking for clear structure they can lift and reuse. A wall of unbroken text is far harder to extract information from than a page organised into headings, short paragraphs and lists.
Use proper H2 and H3 headings that describe what each section actually covers. Keep paragraphs short. Where you’re listing steps, options or features, use an actual bulleted or numbered list rather than describing them in a sentence. This is a quick structural fix that also happens to make your content easier for human readers to scan.
3. Be Specific, Not Vague
Generic marketing language gives an AI system nothing concrete to repeat. “We offer a range of high-quality services” doesn’t tell anyone anything. “I provide monthly SEO audits, on-page optimisation and local search management for businesses across Shropshire” gives an AI tool an exact, usable answer.
Go through your key pages and look for any sentence that could apply to almost any business in your industry. Replace it with something specific to what you actually do, who you actually serve, and what actually makes your approach different.
4. Check That AI Crawlers Can Actually Read Your Site
This is the one most business owners never think to check, and it’s more common than you’d expect. Some hosting setups and security tools, including certain default Cloudflare configurations, block AI crawlers automatically. If that’s happening on your site, none of the content work above matters, because AI tools can’t reach it in the first place.
Check your robots.txt file for anything blocking AI user agents. If you’re not sure how to read it, ask your web developer or hosting provider to confirm AI crawlers aren’t being blocked. It’s a five-minute check that can be the difference between being invisible and being found.
5. Add Structured Data (Schema Markup)
Schema markup is a way of labelling the information on your site so search engines and AI systems can read it unambiguously, rather than having to guess. For a local business, this means clearly marking up your business name, address, opening hours, services and pricing where relevant.
This sounds technical, but most website platforms have straightforward plugins or built-in tools for adding it. It removes any ambiguity for an AI system trying to confirm who you are and what you do, which matters when it’s deciding whether to trust your site as a source.
Where to Go From Here
These five changes are a genuinely useful starting point, and you can make real progress on them without hiring anyone. Where it gets harder is knowing whether they’re actually working, since AI visibility isn’t something Google Analytics tracks in the way you’re used to.
That’s where I come in if you’d rather not manage it yourself, or want a second opinion on what’s actually moving the needle. I test your visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and build a plan around the gaps that matter most for your business. You can see the full approach on my AI Search Services page, and if your SEO foundations need work first, that’s worth sorting before any of the above will make much difference.
