Google Search Console for Beginners: A Simple Setup Guide

Learn how to set up Google Search Console with our simple beginner’s guide. Improve your website’s visibility and track your keywords today.

If you’re running a business, your website is your digital shopfront. But how do you know if people are actually finding the door?

Enter Google Search Console (GSC). It is a free tool from Google that helps you maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot your site’s presence in search results. Think of it as a “health check” for your website’s visibility.

At Sow The Seed Marketing, we believe that every business – no matter how small – should have GSC set up. Here is our simple, no-nonsense guide to getting started.

Why Should You Care About Google Search Console?

Unlike Google Analytics (which tells you what people do on your site), Google Search Console tells you how people find your site. It allows you to:

  • See your keywords: Discover exactly what phrases people are typing into Google to find you.
  • Check for errors: Google will literally tell you if a page on your site is broken or hidden.
  • Submit a Sitemap: This tells Google, “Hey, I exist! Here is a map of my website,” helping you get indexed faster.
  • Monitor Mobile Usability: It alerts you if your site is hard to use on a mobile phone.

Step-by-Step: How to Set Up Google Search Console

Setting it up only takes a few minutes. Follow these four steps:

1. Sign In

Go to the Google Search Console website and sign in using your Google account (ideally the same one you use for your business email or Google Analytics).

2. Add Your Property

Click the “Add property” button. You’ll be given two options: Domain or URL Prefix.

  • Top Tip: For beginners, the URL Prefix is often easier. Just type in your full website address (e.g., https://sowtheseedmarketing.co.uk/).

3. Verify Ownership

Google needs to make sure you actually own the site. There are a few ways to do this:

  • The Easy Way: If you already have Google Analytics installed, you can often verify with a single click.
  • The HTML Tag Way: Google gives you a small snippet of code. You just copy and paste this into the <head> section of your website (most WordPress themes have a simple spot for this!).

4. Submit Your Sitemap

Once verified, look for the “Sitemaps” tab on the left-hand menu. Enter your sitemap URL (usually yourwebsite.com/sitemap_index.xml) and hit submit. This invites Google to crawl your pages immediately.

What to Look for First?

Once you’re in, don’t feel overwhelmed. Start with the “Performance” report. Look at your “Total Clicks” and “Average Position.”

If you see you are ranking on Page 2 (Positions 11–20) for a great keyword, that’s your golden opportunity! A few small tweaks to that page could push you onto Page 1 and significantly increase your traffic.
